Cholesterol is required for the body to create hormones and other substances that are necessary for the digestion of food. The body produces the cholesterol it needs, but it can also be found in our food. Traveling through the blood in lipoproteins, which are made of fat, cholesterol can cause problems if a person has too much of it in their body.


Having high cholesterol levels can have a negative effect on health, and while it has no symptoms, it does, in fact, increase the risk of developing health problems like heart disease. It is important to understand, however, that there are two kinds of lipoprotein. These include low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). LDL carries cholesterol to your body’s cells, and when the cells have more than they can use, it begins to clog arteries and cause heart disease. This is known as “bad cholesterol.”


HDL, however, carries cholesterol to the liver. Here it is broken down and expelled from the body. For this reason, it is known as “good cholesterol.”
